The months of July and August are very special for the town of Pollensa. At the start of the eighth month of the year, this area in the north of Mallorca welcomes la Patrona, its biggest celebration. And it’s no small affair, it features a simulation of the battle between the Moors and the Christians which took place in the 16th century and grabs the attention of any international visitor. Would you like to know what is organized for these celebrations at the end of July and start of August? Our real estate agency in Pollensa will be giving you all the details in this blog article. Don’t miss a thing!
On the 12th of July, the people of Pollensa decide by vote who will be appearing as Joan Mas, the person who came face to face with the Moors in 1550, Dragut, the pirate captain and the other characters from the battle simulation between the Christians and the Moors which takes place on the 2nd of August, and as it’s more commonly known, the day of La Patrona. The individual roles of Joan Mas and Dragut were elected as a group along with the Lloctinent, who first meets Joan Mas on the Carrer Major and commences the battle; and the Abanderat, who carries the pirate flag. As for the other Christian roles, the Ajuntament Vella was also elected, made up of a team of four candidates. All these iconic figures can be seen on the Day of La Patrona on the Carrer Major of Pollensa, where at one end you will see all the Moors, armed with wooden swords and at the other end the Christians with sticks, farming implements and weapons. At this precise moment, the festival reaches its climax and the battle simulation begins. In 2019 for the first time in history since 1846 you will be able to see a women´s battle take place during the simulation.
One of the best features of the celebrations of la Patrona in Pollensa, is that not everything is centred on the 2nd of August. Beforehand a series of activities are organized during the week, and which entertain and capture the imagination of the local people. The celebrations are kick started at the Pollensa Town Hall, where canons are fired into the sky marking its beginning, and a large local flag is unfurled.
