However, the town of Pollensa didn´t exist until 1220 when King Jaume 1 conquered the Muslim opposition and took over the island of Mallorca.
Pollensa, Puerto Pollensa, Formentor and Cala San Vicente make up this area situated between the Mediterranean Sea and the mountains of the Tramuntana Range.

The Calvario and its 365 steps
The Calvario is a hill reached by climbing up 365 steps, one for each day of the year. The steps go between cypress trees and charming houses with traditional stone facades and lead up to a small square where there is a chapel and an impressive lookout point. When you reach the top, you have a panoramic view of the town which includes the Puig de Maria Mountain and the Bay of Pollensa.
The Roman Bridge and its mysterious origins
The Roman Bridge, in Pollensa known as the Pont Romà, in one of the significant enigmas in the area because even today its origins are still a mystery. Some historians maintain the theory that the bridge allowed water to be transported to the historical location of Pollentia, built by the Romans and now called Alcudia. However, others date the origins of the Roman Bridge to medieval times and are convinced that it was probably built after the Conquest of Mallorca by Jaume 1 in the year 1229.
Whatever the exact reason for building the Pont Romà, what we do know now is that it is a must visit in Pollensa.
The Puig de Maria and its panoramic views
According to the legend, strange lights seen at the top of the Puig de Maria attracted the attention of a group of Pollensa inhabitants and there they discovered a carving of the Virgin Mary. This strange discovery was the reason why a shrine was built there in the 14th century.
Nowadays there are many people who decide to climb the 330 metres of the Puig de Maria, an easy hike among oak trees and finishing at a monastery with beautiful views of the Tramuntana Mountain Range and the Bays of Pollens and Alcudia.
Buying a property in Pollensa near the Puig de Maria will allow you to enjoy this stunning scenery and panorama daily. Don´t forget that Pollentia Properties has a wide range of luxury properties for sale in Pollensa and town houses in an unbeatable environment.

The Convent of Santo Domingo and the Classical Music Festival
The Dominican monks decided to build the Convent of Santo Domingo in the 16th century. Over time, the building has been used in different ways and has caught the attention of many people on account of the beauty of its cloisters.
Even though during its history the Convent of Santo Domingo has been a hospice, school, and Guardia Civil barracks, it is currently a central location for cultural activities in the town, such as the Festival of Classical Music of Pollensa, held inside the cloisters during the months of July and August from 1962 onwards.
The Joan March Gardens and the wide variety of native plants and shrubs.
The March family, one of the best-known families in Mallorca, donated one of their properties to the Pollensa Town Hall. In the middle of the property a botanic garden was planted, and this is known as the Joan March Gardens.
In the garden there is a vast range of plants native to the island, such as yew trees, olive trees, carob trees, cypresses, and orange trees, among other species.
Nevertheless, the Joan March Gardens are not only worth a visit to see the plants and trees, but also to view a little piece of the history of Pollensa in the form of elements such as the Gothic tower with mediaeval origins which was part of the former mansion belonging to the Desbrull family, one of the best known in the town.
A stroll through the Joan March Gardens allows you to observe a statue of Joan Mas, a true hero for Pollensa because he was able to organize the defence when confronted by one of the largest attacks from pirates suffered by the town in 1550 and which was repulsed by the Pollensa citizens.
Pollensa Main Square and its weekly market
The Main Square of Pollensa has become a meeting point for people looking for a lively place for a nice breakfast, a mid-morning coffee or a meal with delicious local food in any of the emblematic restaurants.
Alongside the many restaurants in the Main Square and bustling adjoining streets is the weekly market held every Sunday morning from 8.00 to 13.30. A walk around the almost 300 stalls gives you a first-hand insight into local handicrafts and food and you can buy clothes, footwear and accessories.
The Our Lady of the Angels Parish Church and its baroque altarpiece
The town of Pollensa grew up around the Nuestra Señora de los Angeles Parish Church to become of the most famous locations on the island.
Although this parish church dates from 1236, it has been rebuilt on several occasions. One of its most important assets is in the high Altar, where there is baroque altarpiece by the Mallorcan sculptor Pere Joan Obrador in the 18th century and dedicated to the Mare de Déu dels Àngels.
The Fountain of Lleó and the necessity to provide the town with water
The Fountain of Lleó or Lion was built in 1813 and was the first fountain in the town since up to then the inhabitants of the town got water from tanks and wells.
The prolonged droughts and the citizens’ difficulties to obtain water led to them celebrating the Fountain of Lleó with great joy because they were now able to get water right in the town centre.
Leaving the charming town of Pollensa behind us, we can visit Cala San Vicente or Cala Sant Vicenç where the coves of crystal-clear water and the mountain scenery is picture postcard perfect leaving nobody unmoved.
Although just strolling around this small fishing village is a complete delight to the senses, the beaches and coves of Cala San Vicente are without a doubt its main attraction.

The Caves del ´Alzinaret and its necropolis dating from the year 1600 B.C.
Cala San Vicente is not just for lovers of the sun and the beach, but also for history enthusiasts. The Caves of l ´Alzinaret, a necropolis made up of several caves which were excavated around the year 1600 B.C. are rated as the most important pretalayotic funeral site on the island of Mallorca.
In spite of investigations having revealed that there existed a total of thirteen caves, it is currently possible to visit only seven, because the others were destroyed.
Even though the Caves of l ´Alzinaret are now a protected site, it is possible to visit them by walking through an oak forest along a path that allows you to enter into the history of Mallorca and, at the same time, visit one of the most attractive and interesting corners of Cala San Vicente.
The Coves Blanques and their extraordinary views of the Mediterranean.
Just like the Caves of l ´Alzinaret, the Coves Blanques in Cala San Vicente are also a little piece of the history of Mallorca with beautiful views of the sea.
An excursion to the Coves Blanques is suitable for all the family and involves a hike along the path known as the “prisoners´trail” which, as the name indicates, was built by Republican prisoners at the beginning of the 40s. At the end of the Trail, which has spectacular panoramic views of the Mediterranean, there is a cave which was formerly used for storing ammunition.
La Serra del Cavall Bernat y sus sombras proyectadas sobre las rocas
Cala San Vicente has one of the best views of the Serra del Cavall Bernat, a geographical phenomenon which attracts the curiosity of residents in Mallorca and tourists who are visiting the island.
During the first weeks of December, it is possible to make out the shadow of a horse reflected on the Serra del Cavall Bernat, an area of cliffs over 360 metres high which has become one of the most curious natural events to happen on the island.

Once you have discovered what you can see in Pollensa and Cala San Vicente. It is now time to visit Puerto Pollensa, where there is a wide range of villas for sale in an exceptional environment.

Miguel Capllonch Square and its many restaurants.
The Miguel Capllonch Square is a must visit not just because it is the actual town centre but also because it is a very lively area full of bars and restaurants with fantastic terraces.
It is named after Miquel Capllonch Rotger, a pianist and composer from Pollensa born in 1861 who throughout his life was privileged to be able to perform for several European royal families.
Nowadays, there is a weekly market held in this pretty square every Wednesday with stalls selling fruit and vegetables, clothes and handicrafts.
The parish church of Virgen del Carmen, the patron saint of fishermen
If you buy a property in Puerto Pollensa, you will be able to live near places like the Miquel Capllonch Square, where, apart from its many restaurants and bars, is also where you can see the parish church of the Virgen del Carmen, a neogothic building dating from 1933 and dedicated to the Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of sailors and fishermen.
The Old wharf and its traditional boats
In the Old Wharf in Puerto Pollensa you can see the fish market, the Yacht Club building and typical Mallorcan fishing boats. Among them is the “llaut”, a small and traditional boat from the Balearic Islands used for fishing by trawling and which is used nowadays for leisure sailing around the coast.

The Pine Walk and its beautiful boulevard lined with pine trees.
Mallorca is known as the “Island of Calm” because of the tranquillity you perceive in places like the Pine Walk, a boulevard lined with pine trees facing the Mediterranean. If you are looking for calm during your stay in Mallorca, Pollentia Properties recommends a visit at sunrise if you want to see it in all its splendour with the sun rising on the horizon. If you are looking for the best view out over the Mediterranean, an apartment on the Pine Walk here would be a fantastic option.
After that, you could go for a stroll, have a swim from one of the small beaches along the boulevard, do water sports such as kayak or paddle surf or sit on one of the benches on the Pine Walk and have an ice-cream contemplating the sea.
La Fortaleza and its privileged location
When you get to the end of the Pine Walk, you can see the Fortaleza which dates from the 17th century. The building was originally a place of defence to protect the Bay of Pollensa from pirate raids. However, these raids grew fewer over time and completely disappeared in the 19th century so the government decided to sell the building.
Among its owners was the Argentinian painter Roberto Ramaugé who acquired the Fortaleza in 1919 and completely renovated it in order to fill it with works of art and transform it into a luxury residence.
At the beginning of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 the building was confiscated by the Air Force and used for military purposes once more. It was not until 1984 when La Fortaleza was returned to Roberto Ramaugé´s heirs. In 2011, the Brisitsh Conservative Party Treasurer James Lupton acquired the property for 40 miilion euros, which makes it one of the most expensive properties in Spain.
Its fabulous location and stunning panoramic views over the Mediterranean Sea have made the Fortaleza the scene for series such as The Night Manager starring the actor Hugh Lawrie and for weddings for famous people such as Rafael Nadal.
The Fortaleza currently belongs to a Norwegian businessman called Ivar Erik Tollesfen who bought it for about 62 million euros. Although it is not possible to visit it because it is a private property, it´s worth walking to the end of the Pine Walk to view it and observe from afar one of the most emblematic buildings in the whole of Mallorca.

Three are few places in the world that are as magical as Formentor, a peninsula situated next to Puerto Pollensa. Its impressive beauty makes many people interested in buying a property in Pollensa try to find one as close as possible to the most significant places in Formentor, such as the following:
The Colomer Lookout point and its picture postcard scenery
To ride your bike or drive down the road that goes from Puerto Pollensa to the Formentor Lighthouse is a delight for your eyes and even more so if you make a stop at the Colomer lookout point or Sa Creueta lookout point at a height of over 200 metres.
When the sun goes down, this spectacular corner of Formentor give us one of the most beautiful sights in Mallorca. There are few scenes as fantastic as sunset over the Mediterranean Sea and the Tramuntana Mountain Range in this location and it has been immortalized by many artists who have succumbed to the beauty of the Colomer lookout point.

The Albercutx defence tower and its impressive views of the Tramuntana Mountain Range
From the Colomer lookout point there is a paved road which leads to the Albercutx fortified defence tower which dates from the 16th century and which for a long time was one of the main surveillance points in Mallorca.
In the past, there was complete visibility from its altitude of 380 metres which allowed for any sign of an enemy approach to the coast of Mallorca to be swiftly communicated. Nowadays, this location offers one of the most spectacular panoramic views of the Tramuntana Mountains and the bays of Pollensa and Alcudia.
The Formentor Lighthouse and its location 190 metres above sea level
We leave behind the Colomer lookout point and the Albercutx defence tower to continue along the winding road that leads to the Fornentor lighthouse which was built in 1863 with the purpose of helping boats to safely navigate around the Mallorca coast at night.
Due to its location 190 metres above sea level, it was difficult to build but it offers one of the most spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea.
If you are thinking of going up to the Formentor lighthouse, remember that access is usually restricted from the end of June to the middle of September between 10.00 and 22.30.

For over a century, the area of Pollensa was a focal point for artists who were visiting the island of Mallorca. People such as the painter Tito Cittadini, the poet Miquel Costa I Llobera, the painter Joaquin Mir, the writer Agatha Christie, the painter Hermenegildo Anglada Camarasa, the writer Ramón Picó I Campomar, the poet and playwright Santiago Rusiñol, the composer Marilina Ross or the painter Dionis Bennàssar.
At the present time, Pollensa is still considered as one of the areas in Mallorca that offers most cultural activities and the calendar includes such important events as the following:
The Pollensa Museum was opened in 1975 and was a product of the importance of painting in the town. This drew renowned artists to this corner of Mallorca, such as the Catalan Hermenegildo Anglada Camarasa or the Argentinian Ti Cittadini Podesta. However, these well-known painters are just an example of the many artists who found inspiration for their work from the spectacular sea and mountain scenes.
The Pollensa Museum is located in the Santo Doming Cloisters, entrance is free and inside there are works of art, among which there is an outstanding Mandala of Kalchakra donated by the Dalai Lama to the people of Pollensa.
If we are talking about culture in Pollensa, we have to include the Dionis Bennàssar Museum/Residence. The museum is named after Dionis Bennàssar Mulet and is located in the house where the artist, who was born in Pollensa in 1904, lived for most of his life.
Entrance to the museum is completely free of charge and in the interior you will see many examples of the painter´s artistic legacy plus a collection of furniture and personal objects which belonged to Dionis Bennàssar.
Apart from showing the collection of paintings by the painter, the Dionis Bennàsar Museum/Residence is also the administrative office for the Dionis Bennàssar Foundation. This is a non-profit making cultural organization which aims to exhibit, catalogue, maintain and publicize the work of Dionis Bennàssar and organize exhibitions, conferences, concerts and other cultural activities to keep art alive.
Buying a property in Pollensa is the perfect option for people in search of a good climate, delicious cuisine, scenery dreams are made of and a wide range of cultural activities.
Among the events in this area in the north of the island, is the Classical Music Festival of Pollensa, held for the first time in 1962 from an initiative by the English pianist Philip Newman. Since then, around 800 artists have taken part in the Festival, performing in the Santo Domingo Cloisters, chosen to hold this event due to the excellent acoustics and unbeatable location.
More than 60 years later, many people continue to attend the Classical Music Festival in Pollensa every August with the aim of listening to excellent music in an incomparable setting.
The Pollensa area attracts tourists and residents on account of its mild temperatures, delicious cuisine, wide range of cultural activities and, of course, its beaches with crystal clear waters. If you are thinking of buying a property in Pollensa close to the most beautiful beaches, you will find unique locations for the best of sea and sun from the following list:
People who are looking for somewhere for a quiet and pleasant swim will find their perfect place on the beaches of Cala San Vicente. The transparent water is ideal for lovers of snorkelling and the 5-star hotels and exclusive restaurants make this small corner of the north of Mallorca among the best places to find quality tourism far away from the masses.
There are four beaches that a visitor can discover in Cala San Vicente: Cala Barques, Cala Clara, Cala Molins and Cala Carbò. Here is a detailed description of each one:

To get to Cala Boquer you have to park your car in Puerto Pollensa and walk for about one hour and a half there and back.
Although it is easier to get to other beaches in Pollensa, lovers of the sea and hiking consider Cala Boquer the perfect destination. To reach this rocky beach you first have to walk across a delightful landscape of cliffs and old stone kilns. Moreover, if you follow the path that goes from Puerto Pollensa to Cala Boquer you will learn a little more about the history of the location because on the way, it is possible to find remains of Bocchoris, one of the oldest talayotic townships on the island of Mallorca.
At the end of the route you reach Cala Boquer, a beach with rocks and shallow waters which, even though you have to wear rubber shoes to protect the soles of your feet, has incredible views and crystal-clear water.
The Formentor lighthouse offers one of the most spectacular panoramic views in Mallorca of the majestic Mediterranean Sea. If you visit it, you must stop first at the Formentor beach, one of the most beautiful on the island.
Its silver sand, turquoise coloured water and thick pine forests make a landscape of incomparable beauty which is an invitation to take a refreshing dip during the hotter months of the year.
The Formentor beach is about one kilometre in length with views of the Tramuntana Mountains and has been awarded a Blue Flag, symbol of quality, safety and environmental protection.
People who decide to buy a property in Pollensa will be fortunate to live near a beach which, in addition to its unique and beautiful landscape, offers the possibility of renting a sun lounger and a beach umbrella and eating in a restaurant where you can choose from a wide range of dishes to whet your appetite after a refreshing dip in the sea..
Cala Murta is in the Bay of Formentor and is only accessible on foot or by boat which makes it one of the most peaceful beaches in the Pollensa area.
In order to reach Cala Murta, you have to park your car on the Formentor road and walk just over one kilometre through a beautiful pine wood which leads to the cove surrounded by cliff formations.
It is not easy nowadays to find a relatively solitary beach in Mallorca, although luckily there are still some hidden away corners left with few visitors, and mind blowing crystal clear waters, cliff formations, peace and nature in its purest essence.
One example is Cala Figuera, a rocky cove about 15 kilometres from Puerto Pollensa on the way to the Cape of Formentor. Without a doubt, it is worth doing the 20-minute walk from the road to the beach because this is a place that will amaze you with its beauty and its pine forests.

Even though it is not the prettiest beach in Pollensa, Sa Marina beach, in the bay area, attracts lovers of kitesurf and windsurf every summer due to the strength of the wind. Its easy access and proximity to parking areas and seafront restaurants, very useful after a vigorous session in the water.
Even though this is one of the least known beaches of Pollensa, El Caló is a total paradise for anybody looking for an unspoilt beach with few visitors even in the hottest months of the year.
However, you have to be in perfect physical shape to get to El Caló, because in order to get to this natural paradise, you have to hike about four kilometres with continual ascents and descents to reach the cove which, due to its unprotected location, can be choppy on windy days.
Buying a property in Pollensa is the perfect excuse for visiting its many Fairs(Fires) which are fantastic for getting to know the customs, traditions and culture of this northern region.
The island of Mallorca has a lot of wineries and many of them show their wines at the Pollensa Wine Festival, an event held every year in Pollensa town and which everybody who wants to try wines from Mallorca simply must attend.
In 2023, Pollentia Properties had the pleasure of sponsoring this event which brought together wineries from all over the island.
The Pollensa Wine Festival was first held in 2004 thanks to the Associació Vi Primitiu de Pollença, who organized the festival with the aim of providing wineries from Mallorca with the opportunity to exhibit their products. Nowadays the event has the backing of the Pollensa Town Hall.
People who choose to buy a property in Pollensa are usually very interested in getting to know the local customs and traditions and the Pollensa Fair is the ideal place to do that.
Even though the first official records about this event date from the 18th century, some historians claim that it is older even than that. But it is important to emphasize that the Pollensa Fair is still very much alive at the present time.
During the Fair Pollensa is full of people who look forward to visiting the exhibitions and workshops, perfect for any age, story telling for children, and even live music.
The Craft Exhibition (Mostra d ´Artesanía) is worth a special mention as the oldest one of its kind in Mallorca and where the best craftsmen from all over the island come together to exhibit their work to visitors.
Both residents and tourists all get together to have a great time at the street festivals held in Pollensa and at the same time, they are taking part in some of the most famous celebrations on the island.
Pollentia Properties can give you detailed information on the characteristics and special features of the street festivals held each year in picturesque Pollensa.
The festivity of Our Lady of the Angels, the most important event in Pollensa, is held on August 2nd every year. People come from all over the island to see the mock battle between the Moors and Christians, like the one that actually took place in the 16th century with victory on the part of the citizens of Pollensa.
The mock battle in the Patrona of Pollensa starts in the Almoina Square and progresses through the streets of the town to reach the football field in Ca n ´Escarrinxo, where the Christians capture the invaders´flag.
We leave Pollensa to go to Puerto Pollensa where every June 29th the town celebrates the festivity of St. Peter, the patron saint of sailors and fishermen.
This is an essential festivity in a coastal town on the Mediterranean Sea and is a celebration of marine activities with street parties, local dances, concerts, and street markets.
In addition to celebrating the festivity of Saint Peter on June 29th, the inhabitants of Puerto Pollensa also pay tribute to the Virgen del Carmen on July 16th. That is the day to celebrate the festivities of the Mare del Déu del Carme, the patron saint of sailors, in an event with music and dancing ending with a procession of boats around the Bay of Pollensa.
The festivities in Cala San Vicente, held in the middle of August attract many of the inhabitants of Pollensa to the concerts, exhibitions, recitals, dancing and street parties which are ideal for enjoying the pleasant nights of Mallorca with the sea as a backdrop.
Although many festivities in Pollensa are held during the summer months, there is a very important one for the citizens that takes place on the night of January 16th. We are talking about the festivity of Sant Antoni which is also celebrated in many other areas of the island and which has the famous foguerons or bonfires, and demons or dimonis as the main themes.
Alongside the bonfires there is music, firework displays and “capprrots”, carnival like figures with oversized heads that children are usually enthusiastic about.
However, the most important act in the festivity of Sant Antoni takes place on the following day with the blessing of animals, collecting the Pine Tree from Ternelles and transporting the more than 20 metre long trunk from Ternelles to the centrally located Plaça Vella in Pollensa. Many citizens of Pollensa walk alongside the convoy until it reaches its destination.
This celebration consists of the local inhabitants transporting the previously felled pine tree to the Plaça Vella where it is staked in place and rubbed with grease. A contest ensues to see who is the first to climb right up to the top.
The typical cuisine of Pollensa, craft objects and clothes and footwear stalls are all present at the weekly markets held in different areas and perfect for residents and tourists to surround themselves with local products and traditions.

If you get up early in Puerto Pollensa you can contemplate the sunrise from the Pine Walk and finish your walk at the traditional market which is held every Wednesday from 08.00 to 13.30 in the Plaza Miquel Capllonch and has been since 1986. At the present, there are about 200 stalls full of fruit, vegetables, plants, crafts and a lot more.

Although you can access them by kayak, a boat trip could be the ideal choice for people who wish to see the most impressive natural scenery in the area as quickly and easily as possible.
