Although the name is rather confusing, its origins are in the municipality of Alcudia and it was then passed on to the nearby town of Pollensa during the Islamic period.
In 2000, the Consortium of the Roman City of Pollentia took charge of its preservation, protection and providing information to the general public.
Its founder, according to classical writers of the time, was the Roman Consul Quinto Cecilio Metelo druing the conquest of the Balearics between 123 and 121 B.C. This was the starting point for urban life in Mallorca thanks to its development between the 1st century B.C. and the third century A.C. mainly due to its strategic location between the Bays of Pollensa and Alcudia. In consequence it became the most important city in the islands during Roman times occupying between 15 and 20 hectares.
On one side, the “Portella” is the area where the residents of Pollentia lived and it contains the remains of three houses (known as “domus”). Among the ruins you can see the different parts of its structures perfectly. There is the House of the Two Treasures, the Chief´s House, where the bronze Jefe de Nina was found and which can be seen in the Museum and the Northwest House, in a worse state of preservation but which has a piece of the Roman walls from the 3rd century A.C.
In the central area is the “Forum” currently open to the public and the scene of archaeological excavations during the summer. Important information about urban planning in Pollentia has been discovered from its founding in the 1st century B.C. up to the time of the large cementery. Outstanding features are the Capitolino Temple, two smaller temples, a group of Tabernae (i.e. shops or stores) and some decorative elements.
But without a doubt, the most surprising feature is the spectacular theatre excavated directly from the rock and taking advantage of the unevenness of the land. A large part of its structure has been preserved. The “Agosto a la Fresca” programme is held in the month of August and is organized by the Alcudia Town Hall.
When we started our company, we consulted Rex4media, marketing experts, and they suggested the name of Pollentia, which means “Power” in latin in order to underline the simile between our properties and the Roman structures and civilizations that lived on our island for so many years.
The name refers to leadership and expansion, two features which fit in perfectly with our philosophy and track record concerning the professionalism and experience which we have acquired over these past years on the island. For this reason, we are experts in finding your property in Mallorca.
