Aligi Sassu in Pollença: Art, Mediterranean & Lifestyle in Mallorca

Aligi Sassu in Pollença: Art, Mediterranean & Lifestyle in Mallorca

Who was Aligi Sassu?

Born in Milan in 1912, Aligi Sassu was one of the great Italian artists of the 20th century. A painter, sculptor and ceramist, he began his career connected to the Futurist movement and later developed a distinctive personal language featuring red, horses, bullfighting themes and Mediterranean mythology. Throughout his life, he moved between Italy, Switzerland and Spain. He passed away in Pollença—on his 88th birthday—leaving behind a profound artistic legacy.

In Pollença and nearby Cala Sant Vicenç, Sassu found the light, landscape and atmosphere that shaped many of his most emblematic works. One of the most emotional connections with Cala Sant Vicenç is the Via Crucis, which the artist donated to the local church. Although now conserved in the Pollença Museum, the works have been temporarily returned to Cala Sant Vicenç for a public exhibition that celebrates the bond between Sassu and the community.

Pollença pays tribute to “Il Maestro”

On the 25th anniversary of his death, the Pollença Museum is presenting the exhibition “25 anys sense Il Maestro”, a journey through the different periods of Sassu’s artistic career while highlighting his deep relationship with Pollença. This initiative reinforces the town’s position as one of the strongest cultural references in northern Mallorca—a place where heritage and creativity are deeply valued.

Foundation and Legacy

Sassu and his wife Helenita created their foundation in Pollensa, where their final studio was built in 1993. A major part of his collection was also donated to Lugano, forming the core of the Sassu archive. In Mallorca, institutions such as Es Baluard Museu d’Art Contemporani de Palma continue to present his work within a broader contemporary context.
