Mallorca Total Solar Eclipse 2026: a rare sunset spectacle

Mallorca Total Solar Eclipse 2026: a rare sunset spectacle

On Wednesday, August 12th, 2026, Mallorca will be one of the best places in Europe to witness a total solar eclipse at sunset. As the Moon briefly covers the Sun, the island will experience a rare and unforgettable natural spectacle.

The total eclipse will last approximately 1 minute and 36 seconds, making it a truly special moment for residents, visitors and astronomy lovers.

At Pollentia Properties, we celebrate moments like this, where Mallorca’s light, landscapes and Mediterranean lifestyle come together in a unique way.

Basic information

The partial eclipse is expected to begin at around 19:38, with the maximum eclipse at approximately 20:31. The total phase will last around 1 minute and 36 seconds, before the eclipse ends at around 20:49.

August evenings in Mallorca are often warm and clear, although visibility will always depend on the weather. For the best experience, choose an open west-facing spot, either by the coast or from an elevated viewpoint. See further down for the best locations to view the eclipse.

Why is this eclipse so special in Mallorca?

The eclipse will cross Spain from west to east and reach the Balearic Islands just as the sun is setting. In Mallorca, this will create a truly memorable scene: a total solar eclipse over the sea on a warm summer evening.

As the sun will be low on the horizon, choosing the right spot will be essential. Open, west-facing viewpoints and properties for sale with clear sea views are closely connected to this special way of experiencing Mallorca.

The date also coincides with the Perseids meteor shower, which peaks between August 12th and 13th. After the eclipse, from a place with little light pollution, it may even be possible to see a shooting star.

Ideal locations to see the eclipse

To fully appreciate the eclipse, west-facing viewpoints with open sea horizons will offer the best conditions. Some of the most suitable locations include:

Mirador de la Foradada, Deià – One of Mallorca’s most iconic sunset viewpoints, offering dramatic west-facing views. Its popularity, however, means it is likely to be very busy on the evening of the eclipse.

Torre des Verger / Mirador de Ses Ànimes, Banyalbufar – A more intimate coastal viewpoint overlooking the open sea, ideal for a quieter viewing experience.

Far de Cap Gros or Muleta, Port de Sóller – Elevated positions with panoramic views across the bay and out to the open sea, offering excellent visibility as the sun sets.

Sections of the southwest coast, particularly areas of Andratx and Calvià, where open coastal viewpoints allow uninterrupted views towards the horizon.

Safety precautions for viewing the eclipse

To enjoy the eclipse safely, certified eclipse glasses that comply with the ISO 12312-2 standard must be worn during all partial phases. It is only safe to look directly at the eclipse without protection during the brief phase of totality, when the Sun is completely covered.

Regular sunglasses do not provide sufficient protection. If you plan to take photographs with a mobile phone or camera, a proper solar filter should be used on the lens during the partial phases. Binoculars and telescopes also require specific approved solar filters.

If children are present, take a moment to explain what will happen and make sure they keep their protective glasses on during the partial phases.

As the eclipse takes place in August, it is also wise to come prepared with water, hats, sunscreen, a small torch and a light jacket, particularly if viewing from the coast, where evening breezes are common.
